Butterflies and a little bit of magic at Stanmer Park

Sometimes you stumble across a place that makes you go wow. Like really wow. Like OMG no words can describe this level of wow.

That was exactly how we felt when we stepped into the new Sussex Butterfly Gardens at One Garden Brighton.

Outside, Stanmer Park was doing what Stanmer Park does best. Ancient trees swayed gently in the breeze. Families wandered woodland paths. Dogs bounded through the grass. The South Downs stretched out beyond the gardens like a giant green blanket.

Then we stepped through the doors. And suddenly we were somewhere else entirely.

Warm air wrapped around us. Tropical plants climbed towards the glass roof. Grapes were growing. Bright flashes of colour danced through the air.

Butterflies.

Everywhere.

Not behind glass. Not tucked away in displays. Flying freely around us.

Some floated gracefully overhead. Others landed delicately on leaves just inches away. One particularly confident butterfly seemed determined to inspect every visitor who walked through the space landing on heads, shoulders knees and toes. It was like it knew children.

The kiddos were instantly captivated.

“Look at that one!”

“No, look at this one!”

“THERE’S ONE ON MY HEAD”

Every few steps brought another moment of wow.

A butterfly the size of your hand gliding past like a tiny kite. Delicate blue wings catching the light. Intricate patterns that looked as though they’d been painted by hand. Like actual stained glass, but moving in front of you.

It felt less like visiting an attraction and more like stepping into a living storybook.

Stunning Butterflies in Stanmer Park

What makes this experience so special is the contrast.

One minute you’re exploring one of Sussex’s most beautiful parks. The next you’re standing in a tropical butterfly house surrounded by species from around the world.

It’s unexpected. And that’s exactly why we loved it. From our youngest at age 7 to our oldest at 83 in their mobility scooter, the butterfly space is accessible to all.

Can you see butterflies at Stanmer Park?

You certainly can now.

If you walk the woodland trails or the natural wildflower meeadows, you can see them for free. But the newly opened Sussex Butterfly Gardens, located within One Garden Brighton, have transformed part of Stanmer Park into a vibrant tropical habitat filled with hundreds of butterflies.

It’s one of those experiences that’s difficult to explain properly until you’re standing inside it.

Photos are beautiful.

Videos are lovely.

But neither quite captures the feeling of having a butterfly drift silently past your shoulder before settling on a nearby flower.

Brighton is famous for its beach, pier and colourful lanes.

But if you’re searching for something a little different, this might be one of the most unique family experiences in Sussex right now.
