Exploration through choice

Kids Adventurist Principle

At Kids Adventurist, a forest school and adventure based group in Sussex, we believe in the power of the outdoors and its ability to open young minds to a life of exploration, curiosity, and growth.

Young minds doesn’t mean just children for us either - we believe even the oldest of minds are young at heart and can benefit from the the power of the great outdoors

We strive to provide a fun and supportive environment for children and adults to develop their confidence, teamwork, leadership, and creativity through hands-on adventures in nature.

At Kids Adventurist, we hold a fundamental belief that freedom and choice are the cornerstones of meaningful outdoor experiences.

Our first principle, "Empowering Exploration Through Choice," is not just a tagline but a profound philosophy that shapes every aspect of our outdoor play and forest school activities and sessions.

The Importance of Freedom in Learning

Giving children and adults across Sussex the freedom to choose their own adventures fosters independence and aims to encourage lifelong exploration. This learner-led approach is vital for several reasons:

  • When individuals are given the autonomy to make their own choices, they learn to trust their judgment and develop self-reliance. This sense of independence is a crucial life skill that extends beyond the forest and into all areas of life.

  • Making choices in a safe and supportive environment helps participants hone their decision-making skills. Whether it's choosing a path to hike, deciding how to build a shelter, or selecting materials for a craft, each decision is a learning opportunity.

  • Freedom in exploring the outdoors ignites a passion for discovery. When participants choose their adventures, they are more engaged and motivated, leading to deeper and more meaningful learning experiences. They get to choose what they enjoy most.

Scenarios Where Choice Plays a Crucial Role

At Kids Adventurist, we design our activities and sessions to provide ample opportunities for choice, ensuring that every participant can navigate their journey in their unique way. Here are a few examples:

  • We don’t structure every minute of every day at a Kids Adventurist sessions. Why? Because what if the weather changes? What if the children’s mood changes? What we do do however, is we we provide ample opportunities and activities that children can try whenever they wish such as tool work, fire making or exploring the forest to explore at their leisure. This encourages children to make their own choices and take charge of their outdoor experiences.

Creative Construction: During our forest-building activities, participants often have the freedom to select their materials and design their structures. Whether it's a simple den or an elaborate treehouse, the choice of how to build and what materials to use empowers them to think creatively and innovatively. In this sort of forest activity, the Kids Adventurist team may practice or demonstrate different knot tying techniques or building styles which participants can then choose to apply to their own creations - such as free standing dens.

Nature Art Projects: We offer various nature-inspired art projects where individuals can choose their materials, whether it's leaves, twigs, stones, or flowers or introduce clay making and using tools to whittle. By giving them the freedom to choose, we encourage self-expression and foster a deeper connection with nature.

The Benefits of a Learner-Led Approach

Empowering exploration through choice yields numerous benefits that align with our ethos of nurturing confident, curious, and capable individuals:

  • Building Confidence: When participants see the results of their choices, their confidence grows. They learn that their decisions matter and that they can influence their environment positively.

  • Cultivating Curiosity: Choice-driven activities naturally pique curiosity. Participants are more likely to ask questions, seek out new experiences, and learn through exploration, leading to a lifelong love of learning - and the outdoors.

  • Promoting Well-being: Engaging in self-chosen activities in nature reduces stress and enhances overall well-being - there is no pressure to do something someone doesn’t want to do. That is not to say children’s aren’t actively encouraged, but the sense of autonomy and the joy of discovery contribute to a happier, more fulfilled life.

At Kids Adventurist, "Empowering Exploration Through Choice" is more than a principle; it's a commitment to fostering independence, confidence, and a deep-seated passion for the natural world.

By giving our participants, no matter their age, the freedom to choose their adventures, we create an environment where learning is a joyous and lifelong journey.

Whether through trailblazing, creative construction, or nature art, the power of choice is at the heart of what we do, enriching the lives of both children and adults in profound ways.
