October Half Term Forest School Holiday Club
This October half term, the woods are getting a little…stranger.
Smoke through the trees. Strange objects hanging from branches. Fires crackling. Ropes stretched between trees. Half-built creatures appearing in the undergrowth.
This is Halloween, Kids Adventurist style.
No plastic tat. No rows of children making the same thing. No sticking googly eyes onto a pine cone and calling it an afternoon.
We’re taking the stuff we love about forest school — tools, fire, building, making, exploring and getting gloriously muddy — and giving the whole thing a slightly darker, weirder October twist.
All inside an ancient Sussex woodland…
Day 1 - Monday 26 October - Half Term Kids club
The old woodland is going to feel a little different this October half term.
There’ll be smoke curling through the trees, odd shapes hanging from branches and strange little things appearing where last time, there was only bark, moss and a few leaves...
Somewhere in the woods, a fire will be going. Somewhere else, a skeleton might be taking shape from sticks and cord.
A lump of hazel might become a carved talisman. A handful of charcoal might become a creature. A pile of branches might become something nobody had planned at all.
And that’s how we want it at Kids Adventurist half term camps.
We’ll bring the tools, the fire, the materials and a few curious ideas. The kids decide what happens next.
They can carve, drill, lash, build, cook, create, wander off into a project and follow it as far as their imagination takes them.
Because on a Kids Adventurist day, the best things are often the things nobody planned.
And while all of that is going on, there’ll be something else waiting deeper in the woods…
THE WITCH’S RELIC
Years ago, so the story goes, something was hidden here. Nobody knows exactly where.
All that remains are a few clues, an old route through the trees and the warning that finding it was never meant to be easy.
To reach it, they’ll have to cross places they can’t simply walk through.
Move things too heavy to carry. Reach things that are just out of reach.
Rig ropes. Crack codes. Read the woods.
And, if they get far enough, make fire.
Because the final clue won’t reveal itself to just anyone. It needs a little woodland sorcery.
Ropes. Knots. Fire. Navigation. Teamwork. Problem-solving. Mystery…
No laminated pumpkins at Kids Adventurist…pure ancient woodland magic will be revealed… And that’s only on DAY one of our October half term kids clubs outside of Brighton, Westdene, Saltdean, Ovingdean and Lewes.

The Dark Woods Challenge
By the second day, the woods are no longer quiet.
Something has been moving between the trees.
A snapped twig here. A rope disturbed there. Strange marks near camp.
Nobody’s seen anything.
Yet.
So we’ll do what any sensible group of Kids Adventurists would do.
Build a camp. Defend it. Set alarms. Rig traps.
And make sure whatever is wandering around out there doesn’t get our supplies.
The woods become one enormous problem-solving ground.
Children will build woodland alarms from cord, sticks and whatever else they can make work. They’ll rig trip lines, moving parts and noise makers, then challenge each other to sneak through without setting them off.
Then there’s the cargo.
Something important has to get through the forest.
It’s heavy.
It can’t just be carried.
And, naturally, there’s a RAGING river in the way.
So they’ll need rollers, ropes, pulleys, sledges, bridges or some completely ridiculous contraption that somehow works.
And then we’ll go looking for the thing that’s been lurking around camp.
BUILD A FOREST BEAST
This is where the tools really come out.
Saws. Drills. Augers. Cord. Timber. Branches. Whatever the woodland gives us.
The challenge is simple: We’ll create something that looks like it belongs in these woods.
A raven. A giant beetle. A skeleton. A strange creature nobody has ever seen before.
By the end of the day, we want the woodland looking just a little less empty than when we arrived.
And if something is watching us from between the trees?
Well. Hopefully it likes what we made. (but don’t worry, we won’t spook the children - we make it a welcome experience for them!)
Building. Engineering. Ropes. Pulleys. Tools. Traps. Teamwork.

THis bit is for For the grown-ups — is it actually scary?
No. This isn’t a spook house.
There’ll be no jump scares, people leaping out from behind trees or anything designed to frighten children.
The Halloween bit is there to fire up their imagination.
We’re taking the outdoor skills we already use — tools, fire, ropes, building, cooking, problem-solving and natural craft — and wrapping them inside a slightly magical, slightly mysterious woodland story.
So instead of just learning a knot, they might need it to recover something hidden in the woods.
Instead of simply using a drill, they might be building the bones of a strange forest creature.
Instead of lighting a fire because it’s on the activity list, they might need that fire to reveal the final clue.
It’s still Kids Adventurist. Just with a little Halloween mischief thrown in.
What might children do?
Every day with us is different.
The weather changes. The woodland changes. Most importantly, the children change.
We’ll arrive with plenty of ideas, equipment and challenges, but we’re not interested in marching thirty children through the same set of activities.
They might:
build, saw, drill, carve and lash things together
light fires and cook outdoors
create strange things from wood, charcoal and natural materials
build camps, shelters, alarms and contraptions
tackle rope, hauling and engineering challenges
navigate, follow clues and solve problems
play big woodland games
disappear into their own project for an hour
climb into a hammock and have some quiet time
invent something we hadn’t thought of at all
Some children will want to throw themselves into every challenge.
Others will find one thing they love and stay with it.
Both are absolutely fine.
We bring the ideas, equipment, skills and experience.
The children bring the imagination.

Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm both days for day sessions

Important Parent Info
Because we are based outside, as long as it’s safe to do so, to ensure the children are prepared for their day, we need to ensure that they bring:
Changes of clothes - in case they get wet in the stream!
Outdoor shoes / wellies and spare pair of trainers (if they get too wet / muddy)
Waterproof trousers / coat
Layers - lots of layers. they can take them off and store them in our dry chalet, but if it gets cold, the more layers the better
Warm hat / glove / snood / buff - keeps the cold at bay
Packed lunch - no nuts, plus a snack for morning and afternoon. We typically cook up a treat at some point, if the weather allows.
