Family Parkrun

If you're looking for a fun and active way to spend your final weekend of Half Term, why not give Parkrun a try? Parkrun is an international network of free, weekly 5k runs that take place in parks all around the world.

Not only is Parkrun a great opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air, but it's also a chance to be part of a supportive community. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, there will be people of all ages and abilities participating in Parkrun.

It doesn't matter if you walk, push a buggy, jog, run, sprint, fly (well, ok, flying isn't allowed) - everyone is welcome and everyone is celebrated. So why not gather your friends or family and make a morning of it?

After the run, there is normally a café not too far away which you can reward your mini-runners with a breakfast or treat of their choice. Many parkruns are actually located in pretty cool places too, so you may also get to enjoy some early access to some pretty awesome parks and trails!

Plus, did we mention that it's free? That's right; Parkrun is completely free to participate. All you need to do is register online beforehand, print out your barcode and bring it with you on the day (or show it on your phone).

Are you worried about running at parkrun?

If you're feeling hesitant about participating in a 5k run, don't worry - Parkrun is all about inclusivity and there is no pressure to run at a certain pace. You can walk, jog or run at your own speed and there will be volunteers along the course to cheer you on and offer their support.

And, if you’re just getting into the spirit of running, you don’t have to complete it all running. You could walk a bit, jog a bit and save your energy for a sprint finish!

Parkrun is about so much more than just running. It's about coming together as a community, supporting one another, setting goals and challenging yourself. So why not make Parkrun part of your regular

I was worried when we started our first parkrun, but I never should have been. No one cares how fast or slow you run - you get supported however you choose to finish. At a recent event in Seaford, we had one of our RunPals recovering from a broken back, cheering from the side-line, one with a recovering damaged collar bone walking, parents pushing kids in buggies and others pacing at the top end of the speed dial.

So it really doesn't matter how "good" or "bad" you think you are, all that matters is you give it a go.

What is Junior Parkrun?

Don't worry if your little one isn't quite ready for the full 5k.

Parkrun also offers junior parkruns for kids aged 4-14 that are just 2k in length. It's a great opportunity to get children involved in physical activity and have fun as a family.

You can find local junior parkrun courses here and here in Sussex, we have plentiful to choose from.

So why not give Parkrun a try this weekend? It's a great way to stay active together as a family.

How to sign up for Parkrun?

It's really simple... Whether you're taking part in the Saturday 5k or the Sunday Junior Parkrun, head over to parkrun's website here and sign up for your barcode for free.

Don't forget to either print it out or save an image of your barcode to your phone, as you'll need that to register your time and begin to tick off your milestones - how many parkruns will you complete by the end of this year? Your Juniors can receive many different wristbands and even a t-shirt when they complete their first 10 adult parkruns.
